Niger seeds, also called Thistle seeds are seeds from an annual herb from Ethiopia in Africa that produces a yellow daisy-like flower and the seeds which birds love.
Birds that like niger (thistle) seeds are finches, sparrows, doves, goldfinches, chickadees, titmouses, juncos, siskins, and redpolls.
Niger seeds are black, hard-shelled seeds similar to sunflower seeds but smaller. They are very high in oil at about 30–40%, so they are an excellent, high fuel, choice for birds.
Niger (thistle) seeds are used as bird food, but they are sterilized before packaging to ensure they do not grow and become an invasive weed. However, they may sprout if they fall to the ground but will not grow strongly.
